Next Leg

We left Turkey yesterday and flew east two time zones. The place where I am now smells like soiled baby diapers roasting in a 300 degree oven.

Here's a pic snapped during engine start-up in Istanbul. It was a slow go getting out of there. Once airborne we flew across Turkey and into Syria. Syria, Lebanon and Israel have some coast line and green space. Other than this, the Middle East is some of the most lifeless desert I have ever seen. Lebanon seemed especially nice with snow capped mountains and lots of vegetation. Syria was not so nice. Jordan was even worse and Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, UAE and Oman were all desolate. Oman looked a lot like some of Arizona with much more mountain and canyon.

The UAE was flat and dry. There was this cool island development near Dubai. You can see this thing on Google Earth pretty clearly.

Below you can see us on final approach to ???.

I managed a workout today and darn near died. The ergometer I rode had some issues with calibration. That combined with a general state of fatigue combined for a very nasty effort. I suffered for an hour and called it quits. This travel stuff is like chemo. It is a long slow death. What saves you is that the trip ends before too much damage is done. Don't laugh it's true.

All digital display... What do you do if the power goes out and the display goes blank?

That cockpit looks nice and cozy. Plenty of room. Shouldnt you be flying the plane upon landing, not taking pictures?

You need a booster seat so you can see over the dash...

I like the sunglasses, it looks like you're getting ready to race in that cockpit.

This is awesome. Is it a CRJ? How did you get into commercial aviation? Militray? I'm working on my PPL and if medicine doesn't work out I very well may go into aviation

Nice! Is that a Gulfstream V?

As for where you are, based on the humidity, smell, and that 9W A330 parked on the ramp, my guess is Chennai.

Ex-fighter pilot. Three war jet fighter ace. He even shot down a MiG-29 with only guns.

Doug - Standby instruments located in the center of the panel.

Zach - Yes, it is a nice warm cockpit. Some jets i have flown can be a bit on the cool side. It could be a little roomier though.

Scott - the seat does go a lot higher but that is where you need to be to sight the instruments correctly while simultaneously being able to see outside.

Chris - Thanks. I can't afford two sets of sunglasses so my bike glasses are my flying glasses!

Dan - GV. Learned how to fly via the civilian path. I was an airport kid on Grosse Ile washing and fueling airplanes from age 15. Let me know if I can help you out in your career path.

MCNIADH - Yes, GV classic. Your guess is very, very good. I can't say for sure though. Who do you fly for?

Doug - Quite an embellishment. The only thing I have shot down is you as you sunk into the pothole at runway.

Anderson, you grew up on Grosse Ile? You must know some of my cousins, the Camilleri's? Or maybe Marci Strictler? Everyone knows everyone on that island.

GV oh my... calm down Dan. I'm probably going to get my glider license this summer. The problem with getting my PPL right now is that I am living in two places. Either no job and all flying over the summer, or college, biking, and flying during school... hmm

Hey Scott! My wife and I were talking about your ride last Saturday on the tandem recumbent. I didn't know about the situation with Skylar and that she rode with you. Amazing! Well done!

Yeah, my brother and I know the Camilleri's. Rose was my lunch lady in junior high. My brother is good friends with Ken. You say they are your cousin's? Are you Maltese?

Marci Strickler was quite the dame in high school. She was in my brother's class, ('83).

Thanks Darrell! A long time ago, I was in the Navy, and I went to grad school for aerospace engineering. These days, I'm just another Ann Arbor hippie, and the only thing I fly is a Cervelo for the AAVC.

I still do a lot of world travel and have a lot of buddies who are in the industry, so I try to stay up to date through them.

You have a fantastic job, and I really enjoy reading your blog.

Yes, we met at the kick-off party. That was a pretty good eye picking out that A330 and all.

Thanks Darrell, my daughter had a wonderful time at the Time Trial. But how about those South Lyon kids shoving me off the CAT 3 podium? Wholly Cow, apparently you've been training them.

Rose is my mother's sister (Auntie Rose) and they're both off the banana boat from Malta, so I'm half Maltese. Ken saw that article and offered to Captain for Sky to "get a better time".

Marci and I worked together at Avfuel Corp, she could really turn some heads back then.

Have a safe flight back.

Kroske...I married a full-on Maltese woman named Scicluna. I am livin' the dream bro'!! My life is a lot like that dude who married the Greek woman in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". It's a bit of culture shock at first but then it's cool!

One more for Kroske...

My boys do exactly what I tell them to do!! They were gunnin' for the Wolves!! :-)

DMO, (1st place), was a little slow getting into it but when I challenged him to rip the legs off his enemies and swing their legs above his head in triumph he got into it.
