I am looking at a price differential between a brand new Look 566 and a very slightly used Look 555 of $400. This would be James' bike for next year. We are moving him into a size medium frame. The fit doesn't look too bad right now so I am confident he will grow into it nicely. Should I go new or slightly used?

I would go with slightly used. It is cheaper and its a great bike. Its probably the best deal for the money.
The Red one, everyone knows red bikes are the fastest.

400 is a few tanks of gas these days. I think James would be geeked to tryout somehting new.
Go for the upgrade.
+1 on what maino said, he's a fairly young rider, is a slightly better bike going to make him a faster rider? probably not. He'll also grow another 6" in a year and need the size up next year.
Unless you're trying to huck it at the end of next year, then the latest and greatest are easier to sell.
Make him buy his own bike :). Time to get a job James; or run a good scam.
